Automated Field Phenomics

Co-Investigators:

Dr. Wouter Deconinck (Physics, U. Manitoba)

Dr. Chyngyz Erkinbaev (Biosystems Engineering, U. Manitoba)

If we are to mitigate the damage to food systems caused by climate change, we need to develop rugged and autonomous “automated field phenomics” instruments for monitoring and measuring the consequences of the environmental stressors in real field conditions instead of controlled laboratory environments. We propose to design and build low-cost Internet of Things connected devices to measure plant phenotypes in the visible and IR visible spectrum, while simultaneously measuring environmental conditions above and below ground.
